What are the surprising benefits of yogurt, according to a Harvard expert?

Yogurt is one of the most consumed dairy products in the world due to its versatility, nutritional value and health benefits.
Researchers from the Mass General Brigham health system, affiliated with Harvard University, conducted a study to analyze the impact of this product on our health. The results showed that regular consumption of yogurt could help prevent colorectal cancer.
The scientists collaborated with the Nurses' Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study. Data from more than 100,000 nurses and 51,000 health professionals were analyzed from 1976 to 1986. Over the years, study participants answered detailed questionnaires about their lifestyle, health and diet.
Researchers analyzed tissue samples from patients with colorectal cancer to measure the presence of a key bacteria in the gut microbiome. Bifidobacterium is known for its beneficial effects on digestive health and its role in regulating inflammation.
In total, the researchers documented 3,079 cases of colorectal cancer. When examining the patients' tissues, they found that 346 cases (31%) were positive for bifidobacterium, while 775 cases (69%) were negative. While no direct relationship was found between yogurt consumption and overall incidence of colorectal cancer, the researchers concluded that participants who consumed at least two servings of yogurt per week were 20% less likely to develop bifidobacterium-positive tumors.
Yogurt, an ally of good health.
Researchers suggest that regular consumption of yogurt could modify the intestinal microbiome in a way that reduces the risk of developing this disease. The results of this study reinforce the idea that the intestinal microbiome plays a key role in disease prevention. Regular consumption of yogurt could help maintain a healthy balance of intestinal flora, which could influence the reduction of the risk of colorectal cancer.
