Major European markets close with losses, except Madrid

FRANKFURT, Germany — This Monday, with the exception of the Spanish market, which ended practically flat, the main European markets closed with losses, among which the DAX of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange stood out, which lost 0.54%, while the euro closed with a marginal advance of 0.04%, trading at 1.1426 euros per dollar.

The Frankfurt Stock Exchange, Germany, closed Monday afternoon with losses, dropping 130.14 points, equivalent to 0.54%, with its main index, the DAX, standing at 24,174.32 points.

Despite today's losses, the German market has shown sustained growth so far this year.

The DAX, or Deutscher Aktienindex, is Germany's benchmark stock market index, which groups together the 30 largest companies listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange.

The Milan Stock Exchange closed lower on Monday, with the FTSE MIB index falling 0.35% to 40,461.79 points, kicking off the week in the red.

The FTSE Italia All-Share index, meanwhile, fell 0.34% to 42,940.56 points.

During the session, 396 million shares were traded, valued at €2.26 billion.

The drop in the Milanese index occurred amid caution in European markets, while the trade war and tariff policy continue to generate uncertainty.

Among the companies with negative results was Iveco, with a drop of 2.48%, followed by Generali (2.15%), Hera (1.70%), Ferrari (1.18%), Enel (1.12%), Leonardo (1.06%), Nexi (0.98%), A2a (0.94%) or Recordati Ord (0.91%).

Among the companies with positive figures was Stmicroelectronics, with an increase of 2.87%, followed by Campari (2.19%), Diasorin (1.93%), Tenaris (1.71%), Finecobank (1.69%), Saipem (1.08), Amplifon (0.92%), Buzzi (0.82%), Azimut (0.65%) and Stellantis (0.59%).

The Paris Stock Exchange closed with little movement, with investors awaiting the outcome of the trade negotiations that the US and China resumed in London, and the CAC 40 fell a minimal 0.17%.

The wait-and-see attitude of international markets dominated the session, with trading below normal and fluctuating only slightly. The index closed at 7,791.47 points.

Sanofi led the losses (-1.06%), followed by Schneider Electric (-1.03%) and Thales (-0.92%).

On the upside, Pernod Ricard (3.16%) stood out after the Chinese Ministry of Commerce announced that progress had been made in trade talks with Brussels over tariffs on European cognac.

Another major beverage company, Rémy Cointreau, which is not listed on the CAC 40, rose 5.02% for the same reason.

STMicroelectronics (2.85%) and Teleperformance (2.72%) also posted significant gains on the main Parisian index.

The London Stock Exchange closed virtually flat on Monday, down a slight 0.06%, with the defense sector the main beneficiary in the first session of the week, while insurance companies recorded the largest declines.

London's main index, the FTSE-100, fell 5.63 points to 8,832.28, while the secondary index, the FTSE-250, rose 0.61%, or 128.63 points, to 21,285.91.

In terms of losses, the biggest declines were recorded by marketing and communications services company WPP, which lost 2.76% of its shares, followed by insurance providers Hiscox, which fell 2.44%, and Aviva, which lost 1.88%.

On the other side of the scale, defense contractor Melrose Industries, which gained 3.59%, vapor management systems manufacturer Spirax Group, which rose 3.30%, and investment manager M&G, which gained 3.04%, ended the day at the top of the list of gainers.

The Madrid Stock Exchange closed virtually flat (0.03%) on Monday, despite the decline on Wall Street. The Spanish stock market's benchmark index, the IBEX 35, rose just 3.7 points, or 0.03%, to 14,251.3 points.

Wall Street's 0.22% drop at the national close didn't prevent the Spanish stock market from closing the session with gains, albeit minimal, largely driven by the rise of Inditex, which is reporting results this Wednesday. A barrel of Brent crude oil was trading at $66.98, up 0.77%.

Among the major stocks, Inditex (the fourth largest on the IBEX) rose 1.12%, while Repsol advanced 0.21%, BBVA 0.08%, and Banco Santander 0.07%.

On the other hand, Telefónica (the fourth most bearish company on the IBEX) fell 0.6% after learning that it is interested in buying Vodafone in Spain, while Iberdrola fell 0.06%.
