Xesús Díaz, Yolanda Díaz's father and former general secretary of CCOO Galicia, dies.

Xesús Díaz, Yolanda Díaz's father and former general secretary of CCOO Galicia, dies.

The union leader from Ferrol, father of the Vice President and Minister of Labor, has died at the age of 80. The union mourns his passing.

Xesús Díaz , born in Ferrol in 1944, passed away today at the age of 80. He was general secretary of the CCOO ( Working Council of Workers) for eight years, although he remained active as a trade unionist for many years afterward.

The union's National Executive Committee has expressed that CCOO "are in mourning today " and has also expressed its "deepest condolences " to his family and friends, especially to his son José - CCOO union representative - and to the Minister of Labor, Yolanda Díaz , according to a statement.

The CCOO (National Commission for Workers' Rights) recalls that Xesús Díaz worked as an apprentice at Astano—now Navantia Fene , in Ferrol—when he was fourteen. In his early twenties, he became involved with the CCOO, a clandestine union at the time, and participated in the first naval strikes . He was arrested for the first time in 1969 and went to prison again in 1972 and several more times thereafter.

However, the union emphasizes that it always emphasized the importance of the mobilization experienced in Ferrol during those years and reiterates its assertion that "Galicia was at the forefront of the workers' and anti-Franco struggle."

He joined the governing bodies of the CCOO (Working Workers' Union) with the formation of the national union in Galicia. Within the organization, he laid the foundation for the March 10 Foundation and for that date to be institutionalized as the Day of the Galician Working Class.
