What five years ago was interpreted as a return to retro is now consolidated as one of the most solid trends in the high-end : flip phones are a technological evolution with their own identity. In this article, we discuss the four flip models that lead the segment by achieving their own style, with an optimized hinge system and increased durability.

Foldable devices don't just integrate the typical components of any cell phone: they also have to resort to more unique designs . From additional modules, bezels, and batteries tailored to their internal architecture, these are all part of an equation that impacts their cost .

The key component of this clockwork is the hinge . Its articulation allows the screen to expand without showing cuts or wrinkles , remain firm during use, and close smoothly.

This precision engineering - according to estimates by its manufacturers - is designed to withstand approximately 200,000 openings , a figure equivalent to approximately 5 years of daily use .

These phones have moved beyond the technological curiosity stage and offer complete solutions that allow you to work, create, and edit content seamlessly. The four models are: Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7, Motorola Razr 60 Ultra, Xiaomi Mix Flip, and Tecno Phantom V Flip 2.

And while the foldable market could experience a slight slowdown this year, analysts don't see it as a definitive setback. According to projections from the consulting firm Counterpoint , 2025 would mark negative growth in the single digits , an unprecedented event for a constantly expanding segment.

Far from being interpreted as a ceiling, this pause is seen as part of a restructuring process. According to Jene Park, an analyst at the firm, the medium-term outlook is encouraging: the launch of the foldable iPhone in 2026 is expected to give a new boost to the category.

However, Apple won't have it easy: durability challenges and achieving a competitive price are two of the main problems facing phones in this format, something no manufacturer has managed to solve to date.

Locally, in the premium foldable ring, the main battle is between the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7 and the Motorola Razr 60 Ultra . And while their technical differences are minute, both are ready to bend (literally) but not break in the fight for consumers' wallets.

Thus, while the resolution of the Galaxy climbs to 2,520 by 1,080 pixels, against the 1,272 by 1,080 of the Razr, the refresh rate of the latter, both on the cover screen and the internal one, reaches 165 Hz against 120 Hz of the Flip7.

The Razr uses the Snapdragon 8 Elite mobile platform, considered the best Android chip currently available. Samsung opted for the Exynos 2500, which, at least on the cards, is inferior to Qualcomm's.

As for longevity, the Flip 7 offers 7 years of software and security updates, meaning it can be used safely until 2032, while the Razr Ultra will receive 3 years of software and 4 years of security.

The Galaxy Z Flip7 doesn't just fold: it also thinks. This generation's achievement is that AI lands in a compact form factor, without sacrificing power. The system integrates features like Now Bar, Now Brief, and Gemini Live into the external display, allowing you to view, interact, and complete tasks without opening the phone.

Another positive aspect is the speed with which Samsung moved to release the new Android 16. The stable version was released just a month ago for the Google Pixel and is already integrated into its new foldable phones. A move that reinforces the brand's commitment to technological innovation.

Among its outstanding issues was the expansion of the external display. Under the name FlexWindow, it grew from 3.4 to 4.1 inches and allows access to more widgets. It is a 6.9" AMOLED panel that maintains the 21:9 aspect ratio and Full HD+ resolution.

It also abandoned the rigors of the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy to embrace its own creation: the Exynos 2500. Manufactured using Samsung Foundry's 3-nanometer GAA process, it has 10 cores. It comes with 12GB of RAM and up to 512GB of internal storage.

To power the new engine, the Flip7 features a 4,300 mAh battery, a 300 mAh increase over the previous generation. It arrives in August and will cost around 2,399,999 pesos .

"In this segment, Motorola is the undisputed leader and the company with the most experience. We were the first to launch flip-format foldables in 2019, and during the first quarter of this year, we are the global leader, according to IDC, with significant growth in all regions," says Germán Greco, executive director and general manager of Motorola.

And he adds: "For example, Motorola has a 70% share of foldable phones in the US. In addition, 20% of those who buy a Razr come from iOS."
