The American attack on Iran, in the night from Saturday to Sunday Dutch time, caused a lot of discussion on TV. Talk show Renze also discussed the situation and American President Donald Trump last night. Journalist and America expert Twan Huys had something to say.
Donald Trump, who is expected in The Hague in the coming days for the NATO summit , also spoke about 'America - Iran' yesterday. He spoke on his social media platform Truth Social about a change of power in Iran.
Trump: "It's not politically correct to use the term 'regime change.' But if the current Iranian regime can't make Iran great again, why not have regime change?"
The attack on three nuclear installations in Iran was done with the B-2 Spirit aircraft, which you can see in the video above. The military aircraft launches heavy bombs that can penetrate 60 meters into the ground. Some 125 aircraft were deployed (including fighter jets and reconnaissance aircraft).
Earlier, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth had stated that the attack on Iranian nuclear facilities was carried out to eliminate the threat of the Iranian nuclear program, not to bring about regime change. US Vice President JD Vance (see video below) also emphasized that the Iranian nuclear program was the target. Iran immediately threatened retaliation after the US attack .
Renze Klamer of course paid attention to the American attack on Iran last night in Renze , after Israel and Iran had been bombarding each other with missiles for several days. Klamer asked: "Why now?"
Twan Huys on that question: "Trump has said in recent days 'nobody knows if I'm going to do this, I'm the only one who knows'. It's also an ego issue. In recent weeks, such an abbreviation has been invented for Trump, that he is actually a coward. TACO, Trump Always Chickens Out . So he always runs away when things get exciting. That undoubtedly plays a role somewhere in his psyche, I now also have to show that I can do it. And what I think is most important, is that he is being played a little - well, a little too much - by the Prime Minister of Israel, Netanyahu. He has sucked him into this conflict in recent months. That happened last night with great success."
Huys continues: "For Trump, it was undoubtedly also a consideration that he saw that Israel had cleared the way. That the anti-aircraft guns in Iran had been blown away. That did not make the American mission harmless, certainly not, but according to the Pentagon and the generals it was doable. What you obviously do not want, because then it has failed immediately, is for the Americans to be shot out of the sky. That was almost impossible. I still think that the American president thought 'well, here we can achieve a success. We can do this and then I can show in one go that I dare. That I have the courage as Commander in Chief to undertake such an action. It may be virtually risk-free and then we shout: now we are going to fight for peace."
