Amazing Case: Extra Legs Sticking Out of Teen's Belly
This unusual case was reported by Indian doctors from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi. As the specialists explain, a parasitic twin is a rare phenomenon that occurs once in 100,000 births. It occurs when one of the fetuses stops developing and remains dependent on the other, not separating during pregnancy. In this case, the extra limbs had their own innervation and were sensitive to touch, temperature and pain.
"There are only 40-50 similar cases reported in medical literature worldwide. We had no ready-made solution, we had to rely on our own experience," said Dr. Asuri Krishna, quoted by The Indian Express.
Doctors divided the procedure into two stages. First, they removed the parasitic twin, and then a cyst that had been discovered in the teenager's abdomen. Detailed tests showed that the extra limbs were connected to the patient's sternum but did not interfere with the functioning of his major organs.
“The biggest challenge was to precisely separate shared blood vessels, nerves and tissues to avoid damaging healthy organs,” Dr. Krishna explained.
The operation lasted about two and a half hours. During it, the patient's blood pressure temporarily dropped - doctors suspect that this was the result of blood flowing to the parasitic twin. However, the situation was quickly brought under control and the procedure was a success.
New life after surgeryFour days after the operation, the boy was discharged from the hospital in good condition. For years, he endured ridicule and rejection from his peers, which caused him to drop out of school early. Now he hopes for a normal life.
"I couldn't travel or do any physical activity. I hope to study and find a job. A new world has opened up for me," he told The Indian Express after the surgery.
