Motion to lift Dariusz Matecki's immunity. In the background, the case of the State Forests

"Today, I have submitted to the Speaker of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland, Szymon Hołownia, a motion for the Sejm to lift the immunity of MP Dariusz Matecki and to consent to his detention and temporary arrest," Minister Adam Bodnar announced on social media.

The Prosecutor General said that the motion was the result of "the work of Investigative Team No. 2, investigating the Justice Fund scandal and related matters."

The Minister of Justice announced that MP Dariusz Matecki is to face charges including: "taking action to achieve financial and personal benefits by consulting with officials of the Ministry of Justice the terms of offers from the Fidei Defensor and Friends of Health associations before formally submitting these offers in the competition for grants from the Justice Fund".

Another accusation concerns "taking action in order to gain financial and personal benefits, aimed at designating specific organizations as those to receive a targeted subsidy, contrary to the rules of the announced competition."

The MP is also expected to face charges of "taking action aimed at preventing and hindering the determination of the criminal origin of means of payment in the amount of not less than PLN 447,500" and "concluding two fictitious employment contracts with the State Forests Information Centre and the Regional Directorate of the State Forests and certifying falsehoods in documents confirming the performance of work that was not actually performed".

The services arrested three former directors of the State Forests on Tuesday morning. They are Józef K., former director general, Michał C., former director of the State Forests Information Center, and Andrzej Sz., former director of the Szczecin directorate.

Jacek Dobrzyński, spokesman for the Ministry of Interior and Administration, said that the men were detained in the Silesian, Łódź and West Pomeranian Voivodeships.

"After completing the procedural activities, those detained will be transported to the National Prosecutor's Office in Warsaw," he added.

"The State Forests fully support the services' actions aimed at explaining the irregularities that occurred in our institution in previous years. Today's arrests of three former directors of the State Forests are another stage of proceedings concerning the management of PGL LP in the past," it was reported.

It was added that so far 60 notifications have been submitted to the prosecutor's office in cases of corruption, mismanagement and actions to the detriment of the State Forests.

"There will be no tolerance for actions that harm the public interest. The State Forests are the common good of all citizens and their future must be built on transparent principles and responsible management," the statement assured.
