New York State and City on the list of jurisdictions that hinder immigration enforcement

Federal authorities have placed New York State and New York City on a list of "sanctuary jurisdictions" – local governments whose leaders, according to the federal government, hinder the enforcement of immigration laws.
According to a Tuesday announcement from the U.S. Department of Justice, New York State, New York City, and the city of Rochester have been added to a list of local governments that "impede the enforcement of immigration law" by federal law enforcement.
The list was created under the executive order "Protecting American Communities from Criminal Aliens," signed by President Donald Trump earlier this year. Under the president's order, the government must publish a list of local governments deemed to be obstacles to federal immigration policy.
“Sanctuary policies, by design, hinder law enforcement efforts and put American citizens at risk,” said Attorney General Pamela Bondi. “The Department of Justice will continue to sue sanctuary jurisdictions and work with the Department of Homeland Security to eliminate these harmful practices,” she said.
Last month, the Trump administration filed a lawsuit against New York City Mayor Eric Adams and other local officials. The lawsuit accuses the city of engaging in a 35-year-long effort to hinder cooperation between local law enforcement agencies and federal immigration authorities.
