The whole of Poland has heard about cadet Piotr Milczarek from the District Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Kołobrzeg. On April 27, 2023, while returning from duty, he witnessed a road accident on the S6 expressway. Fulfilling the firefighter's oath, which includes saving human life in danger, even at the risk of his own life, he rushed to help the injured. Although he took precautions, he himself had an accident.
He was hit by a car driving on the expressway. The firefighter was transported to a Koszalin hospital in serious condition. The hopes for his survival were slim. Fortunately, the hero's strong body fought. Piotr Milczarek remained in a coma, however, and in this condition he was taken to the Budzik clinic for adults in Warsaw. He was visited there by, among others, firefighters from Kołobrzeg, who even recorded an audiobook for him. It was played to the injured colleague in the hope that by recognizing the voices of his colleagues, he would regain consciousness more quickly. After more than a year in the clinic, the heroic firefighter woke up. He was discharged home for further rehabilitation. Despite the efforts of specialists, family and friends, he remained disabled.
At the District Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Kołobrzeg, a farewell was paid to the retiring cadet Piotr Milczarek. In addition to the numerous local firefighters and family, the ceremonial meeting was attended by the deputy of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship Commander of the State Fire Service – Senior Brigadier Krzysztof Makowski. The ceremonial roll call was preceded by a traditional guard of honour. In this way, Piotr Milczarek's colleagues paid tribute to him in recognition of his attitude and complete dedication to others.
During the speeches, there were moments of emotion. The heroic firefighter, who can no longer be professionally active due to injuries he sustained, received commemorative gifts from his colleagues and superiors. Among them was a helmet decorated with scenes from the lives of firefighters.
