On Friday evening, Donald Trump said he was “very unhappy” with a phone call with Vladimir Putin that failed to produce any progress toward ending the war in Ukraine. “It’s a very difficult situation. I said I was very unhappy with my conversation with President Putin. He wants to go all out, he just wants to kill people. That’s not good,” the US president told reporters aboard Air Force One.

The US president has hinted that he may tighten sanctions against Russia, something he has managed to avoid doing for the past six months as he tried to convince his Russian counterpart to end the war.
