Senior Woman Falls Victim to Grandchild Fraud, Pays Back $100K
The detained 25-year-old Ukrainian citizen acted as a "receiver" in the entire procedure. The man was charged with fraud and, by court decision, will spend the next three months in custody. He faces a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.
The incident occurred in January in the Dąbrowa Białostocka commune . An 80-year-old woman received a call on her landline from someone claiming to be her granddaughter, claiming that she had hit a young woman and needed money for an operation. In the background of the conversation, a man claiming to be a prosecutor could be heard, informing her about impending imprisonment. The senior citizen, convinced of the authenticity of the call, agreed to transfer the money.
A young man who arrived by taxi to a senior citizen's home took a cosmetic bag with money from her. The police established his identity and detained him in Szczecin. The evidence collected allowed the prosecutor of the District Prosecutor's Office in Sokółka to charge him with fraud.
Legal consequencesThe 25-year-old arrested will spend the next three months in custody by court order. According to the penal code, he faces up to 10 years in prison for fraud. The police appeal for caution and distrust of unknown callers, especially in the case of requests to transfer money.
