Pope Francis has approved the decree on the heroic virtues of candidate for the altars Kunegunda Siwiec (1876-1955). The Polish-born lay nun, Carmelite tertiary and mystic, took the name Teresa of the Child Jesus after taking her vows. The document signed by the pope is one of the decisions Francis made in the hospital during a meeting with Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin.

Pope Francis received on Monday at the Gemelli Polyclinic the Secretary of State of the Holy See, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, and his deputy, Archbishop Edgar Pena Parra. After the meeting, the Vatican published a list of the decrees of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints approved by the pope .

This was the first meeting with the Secretary of State, the second most important figure in the Vatican, since the beginning of the Pope's hospitalization.

The approval of the document on the heroic virtues of Kunegunda Siwiec , born in Stryszawa in Lesser Poland, marks an important step towards her beatification.

Kunegunda Siwiec as a young woman completed a catechetical course and taught the principles of faith to children and adults preparing to receive the sacraments. She belonged to the Apostleship of Prayer in Stryszawa. Then she joined the Brotherhood of the Infant Jesus of the Discalced Carmelites in Wadowice. She took vows and took the name Teresa of the Infant Jesus .

She donated part of her land to build a chapel and the convent houses of the Resurrectionists in Stryszawa. In 1948, she fell ill with incurable bone tuberculosis. She died in her family home in 1955.

The Discalced Carmelites requested her beatification. The Vatican agreed to begin the beatification process in 2007 .

Pope Francis also approved, among other things, the decree on the offering of life of Father Emilio Giuseppe Kapaun , born in the United States in 1916. He died in a camp in North Korea in 1951.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Vatican provided new information on the health of the pope, who has been staying at the Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome for several days due to bilateral pneumonia.

The statement stressed that "Pope Francis rested well throughout the night."

On Monday evening, the medical bulletin reported that there had been a slight improvement in the Pope's critical condition.

The Pope has not had another respiratory crisis since Saturday. It was also explained that oxygen therapy is continuing, but with smaller doses of oxygen.

On Tuesday, the Vatican released Pope Francis' message for Lent . "With the penitential sign of ashes on our heads, with faith and hope we begin the annual pilgrimage of Lent," Francis wrote.
