Fires in Spain claim second life

"My sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, who was involved in fighting the fires in León, in the Nogarejas area. May he rest in peace," wrote the mayor of Castile and León, Nicanor Sen Vélez, on the social network X.
Emergency services were alerted at 7:17 p.m. on Monday that two people with burns were in a "vegetated area" near Quintana and Congosto.
“One of them, a 35-year-old man, died, and the other, about 36 years old, was taken by ambulance to the hospital in León,” they said.
Firefighters also rescued “a third injured person, also with burns, who was in the same area,” they added.
The fire in Molezuelas de la Carballeda, and more broadly in Castile and León, is one of the most concerning for emergency responders: the region has seen several fires in recent days, including in Las Medulas, ancient Roman gold mines classified as a World Heritage Site.
Madrid authorities also announced the death of a 50-year-old man, as a result of severe burns all over his body, in a forest fire in Tres Cantos, a town 25 kilometers from the center of Madrid.
