Ron DePinho

Doctor and researcher , son of Portuguese parents from Ovar but born in the Bronx , New York, Ronald DePinho dedicated his life to studying therapies against the major pathologies of the modern world.

Internationally recognized for his discoveries in the fields of cancer, aging, and age-related degenerative diseases , he received his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1981 and held prominent positions at the Dana- Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School . He was president of the MD Anderson Cancer Center , where he launched a program designed to accelerate the translation of scientific discoveries into significant improvements in the prevention, detection, and treatment of cancer , and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Medicine .

Having won several awards throughout his career, and being a leading figure in biomedical research , he keeps his connection to Portugal alive, especially through the Portuguese Diaspora Council, having opened a scholarship in 2024 for Portuguese doctors to join research teams at the best American institutions in the field of cancer .
