US Senate confirms former Fox News host as Washington's top attorney

Pirro, the former host of Fox News' "The Five," was confirmed Saturday by the upper house of the United States Congress, with a 50-45 vote.
In May, US President Donald Trump announced on the Truth Social platform that he had appointed Pirro as acting US Attorney for the District of Columbia. He later appointed her to the position permanently.
Trump had initially nominated acting Attorney General Ed Martin, but withdrew that nomination after pressure from Senate Republicans.
Trump explained in the post that Pirro was a former deputy district attorney for Westchester County, New York, and that she had also served as a county judge and district attorney.
Following the Republican leader's announcement, Fox News announced that Pirro would leave the network effective immediately.
Pirro was one of the Fox hosts targeted in a lawsuit filed for questioning the validity of the 2020 presidential election counts on the network's broadcasts.
Fox settled the case out of court and was forced to acknowledge the falsehood of Pirro's and other anchors' statements.
In 2021, Trump pardoned Pirro's ex-husband and longtime Republican lawyer, Albert J. Pirro, who was convicted of conspiracy and tax evasion in 2000.
