Zelensky confirms White House visit on Friday

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed today that he will meet with his US counterpart Donald Trump in Washington on Friday to finalize an agreement on the exploration of Ukrainian minerals.
“There is a working date (…) Friday,” Zelensky confirmed during a press conference in Kiev, after this information had already been advanced by the White House.
In recent weeks, Donald Trump has demanded access to strategic Ukrainian minerals to make up for billions of dollars paid to Kiev during former President Joe Biden's administration in military aid.
“My question (to Donald Trump) will be quite direct: Will the United States stop the support or not? Can we buy weapons and get more help?”, explained the Ukrainian leader later, speaking in English and referring to support for the resistance to the Russian invasion that began in February 2022.
On Tuesday, a senior Ukrainian official said that Kiev had accepted the terms of the agreement allowing the United States to exploit Ukraine's mineral resources, and that Zelensky could sign the agreement in Washington on Friday.
“This is just a beginning, but it can be a great success. Success will depend on our conversation with President Trump,” Zelensky added during the press conference, saying that in the agreement, Kiev and Washington “will be able to talk about security guarantees and specific quantities.”
Zelensky explained that the proceeds from the resource agreement will be deposited in a joint US-Ukraine fund and that Ukraine will not be “indebted” for aid provided during Biden’s presidency (2021-2025).
Kiev hopes the deal will improve its relations with the current US administration, which have deteriorated following President Trump's violent verbal attacks on his Ukrainian counterpart in recent weeks.
