EDP maintains leadership in the free market, but loses share compared to 2024

EDP Comercial continues to lead the free electricity market in mainland Portugal, but its position is showing signs of erosion. In June 2025, the company held 59.8% of customers and 37.2% of consumption in the deregulated market, according to data from the Energy Services Regulatory Authority (ERSE).
Compared to June 2024, EDP lost 4.6 percentage points in customer share, although it recorded a slight increase of 0.8 percentage points in consumption share. This development indicates that, despite having fewer customers in relative terms, the company remains relevant to higher-income consumers.
Among the main competitors, Endesa and Iberdrola also recorded small losses in customer numbers compared to May 2025, of 0.1 percentage points each. However, Endesa was the company with the largest drop in consumption share last year (-3.6 percentage points), while Iberdrola remained relatively stable.
Among growing companies, MEO Energia gained the most customer share last year, with a 2.0 pp increase, strengthening its presence in the residential segment. In terms of consumption, EDP saw the highest year-on-year growth, followed by modest gains from other smaller energy providers.
In the residential market, where EDP maintains 45.7% of consumption, competition has intensified: MEO Energia gained 3.1 percentage points in this segment, while Endesa and Galp lost share.

There are increasing reports indicating a growing trend in switching energy suppliers, revealing that the Portuguese are more aware of potential savings and the different offers on the market. We see a society increasingly focused on seeking savings, taking advantage of the best opportunities and promotions available. Consumers compare offers more and end up switching much more frequently than before.
The data shows that, although the free market is becoming more competitive, with slight declines in concentration indices (HHI), EDP remains the leading operator, but faces a growing challenge to maintain its leadership in an environment of greater mobility and diversification of supply.
