Montenegro announces reinforcement of security forces and warns of new threats

During the Oath of Honor ceremony for 439 new Public Security Police ( PSP ) officers in Torres Novas, Luís Montenegro highlighted the role of security forces in the democratic rule of law, stating that "without a strong, active and well-prepared police force, we cannot guarantee security and, without security, there is no freedom."
The Prime Minister advocated a strategic review of security forces' missions, adapted to new threats and criminal phenomena, and reiterated the government's commitment to increasing the number of PSP recruits and promoting "greater proximity between the police and citizens."
"Portugal is one of the safest countries in the world, but that's not guaranteed. There are new threats that must be addressed," he warned.
The head of government recalled the measures already implemented by the executive, such as the increase in the risk supplement, the review of careers and "the improvement of working conditions", including in equipment and infrastructure.
"Our police officers aren't just concerned about salaries. They also want, deserve, and need good conditions to carry out their duties," he stated.
Luís Montenegro also advocated for tougher penalties for those who violate the physical integrity of officers, considering it "unacceptable" that police authority be disrespected.
"This reinforcement of criminal repression is essential to guarantee the effectiveness of the police mission," he stressed.
