Banks cannot be forced to accept old dollars or exchange them for new ones for free, said Tatyana Belyanchikova, associate professor of the Department of World Financial Markets and Fintech at the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, in an interview with the Prime agency. According to her, it is better not to try to make an exchange at the moment unless there is an urgent need.
American currency has no expiration date. Thus, in the USA any dollars are accepted for exchange if they are not older than 1914. However, this can only be done in state banks; private organizations often set their own rules.
US legislation in this regard does not apply to other countries , Belyanchikova added.
It should also be remembered that banks can always impose a commission for accepting worn banknotes. The amount is set by each organization individually.
Therefore, according to the expert, it is necessary to familiarize yourself in advance with all the conditions for exchanging dollars in the countries where this process is planned to take place. But it is better to wait with the exchange for now. Presumably, after the establishment of relations between Washington and Moscow, Russians will have full access to the new American bills.
It was previously reported that old US dollars differ from new ones by a blue security stripe. Despite the refusal of individual organizations to accept and exchange old dollars, officially they can still be used, there are no restrictions on this.
