Money for freedom: 21 cases of bribery of traffic police officers revealed in Novgorod region

In the first seven months of 2025, 21 traffic violators were caught in the Novgorod region, trying to “negotiate” with traffic police officers for money.
“In almost forty percent of cases, motorists offered traffic police officers a monetary reward to avoid administrative and criminal liability for driving a vehicle while intoxicated,” said Police Colonel Viktor GAVRILOV, Head of the Novgorod Region State Traffic Inspectorate.
The latest incidents occurred in July. Thus, on the night of the 13th, police officers stopped a car with a drunk 39-year-old woman at the wheel. She refused to undergo a medical examination and offered a bribe to the traffic police. And on July 24, on the federal highway M-10 "Russia" in the Krestetsky District, a 65-year-old truck driver tried to avoid responsibility for drunk driving in the same way. Now, administrative protocols have been drawn up against both of them, as well as notifications of attempts to commit corruption offenses.
The Chief State Inspector of Road Safety of the region reminds that giving a bribe to an official is a serious crime. This act falls under Article 291 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, which provides for a penalty in the form of a fine of up to 4 million rubles or imprisonment for up to 15 years.
