ISTANBUL, June 2 – RIA Novosti. The Turkish side expects that the talks between the delegations of the Russian Federation and Ukraine in Istanbul scheduled for Monday will lead to progress on the ceasefire issue and that the parties will agree on their positions, RIA Novosti was told in the Turkish presidential administration. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov previously stated that the Russian delegation is ready to present the Ukrainian side with a memorandum on the settlement during the second round of talks in Istanbul on June 2. Russia proposes exchanging memoranda on the approaches of both parties to the negotiation process at the upcoming possible talks with Ukraine in Istanbul, Vasily Nebenzya, Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN, said on Friday. "As Mr. President (of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan – ed.) has already stated, we expect progress on the ceasefire issue and the agreement of positions. It is important to continue the negotiation process to stop the war. Turkey is ready to do everything in its power in this direction," the representative of the Turkish presidential administration said. Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed that Ukraine resume direct talks without preconditions in Istanbul on May 15. According to the press secretary of the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov, the goal of the proposed talks with Ukraine is to eliminate the root causes of the conflict and ensure Russia's interests. The Russian delegation arrived in Istanbul on May 15, but there were no contacts between the representatives of the two countries. The meeting took place the following day and lasted almost two hours. Russian presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky, who heads the Russian delegation, said that Moscow and Kyiv agreed to present their vision of a possible future ceasefire. Medinsky also stated Russia's readiness to continue talks with Ukraine.
