2 women charged after man set on fire in downtown London

London Police have arrested and charged two women in connection with an alleged assault police say involved a man being set on fire on a downtown street.

It happened around 9 a.m. Monday on Wellington Street, near York Street, according to a police spokesperson. They claim the two women knew the alleged victim.

While the extent of his injuries isn't clear, a police spokesperson said the alleged victim suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries in the incident.

Police said one woman approached the man and poured hand sanitizer and an unknown liquid on him, before igniting the substances. The second woman approached the man, kicked a nearby item that was on fire beneath the man's legs, and left as well, police claim.

Property belonging to the man was also damaged, police say.

Several hours later at 1 p.m., the women were arrested by police.

A 33-year old London woman, and a 37-year old Muncey woman were jointly charged with the following:

  • Aggravated assault.
  • Mischief under $5000.
  • Causing bodily harm by criminal negligence.

Both of the accused had court appearances scheduled in London on Tuesday.

Police are asking members of the public with information on the incident to contact them, or to get in touch with London Middlesex Crime Stoppers.
