Panic in Majorca as plane crashes into the sea

A plane crashed into the sea in Majorca yesterday evening. An emergency response got underway after the incident at sea at Port Soller was reported at 8.20pm. It was said at the time that the condition of the people involved was unknown. The two-seater biplane took off from the Binissalem aerodrome at around 6pm on Saturday, it is believed, and footage was taken of it doing aerobatics. The wreckage has been found, but, as of 22.42pm yesterday, it had not been confirmed whether there were two or one person inside the aircraft.
On the Wings of Aviation reported on X: "Plane crash in Majorcan waters. An F4 Raider acrobatic plane that had taken off from the small Binissalem airfield crashed just 100 meters from the port of Soller, in Mallorca. Witnesses claim to have seen the plane performing numerous aerobatics before violently crashing into the water.
"Divers have found the wreckage of the aircraft, but so far, its occupant or occupants have not been recovered (it is unclear whether there was one or two people on board).
"Rescue teams continue to work at the accident site."
Majorca Daily Bulletin reports that personnel from the Soller Fire Station, the Maritime Safety Agency, and the Guardia Civil's diving unit were involved in search and rescue efforts.
It comes as tourists seem to be turning their backs on Majorca, prompting holidaymakers arriving on the island to question why it is so quiet.
A huge decrease in popularity could spell the end for hundreds of shops and restaurants, which rely on tourists spending money, especially during the peak summer season.
In addition, Brits travelling to Spain will be hit with increased fees as the country introduces a plan to hike airport charges by 6.5%.
The policy, scheduled to be implemented in March 2026, is already sparking controversy in the Canary and Balearic Islands.
There are fears among some locals that the increased cost of €11.03 per passenger (£9.63) could deter tourists from travelling to Spain.
