From opulent luxury to stunning mountain ranges, seven of the world's most scenic rail journeys are a must-do for every rail enthusiast and traveller. They vary from basic to luxurious, but having all been featured on Lonely Planet's list of amazing train journeys, they have one thing in common: breathtaking scenery.

A 46-hour journey takes you from Tanzania to Zambia, where you may even get the chance to see the big five from your seat.

The Tazara train is a single-track railway in East Africa which departs twice a week, covering 1160 miles to connect Dar es Salaam in Tanzania to Kapiri Mposhi in Zambia. It passes through magnificent scenery, including the Selous Game Reserve.

After departing from the chaos of London Euston late afternoon, passengers wake up to the rugged beauty of the Scottish Highlands on the Caledonian Sleeper train.

It takes just over 13 hours to arrive at Fort William, where you could hop off and choose to hike Scotland's highest peak, Ben Nevis. Passengers can choose from a luxurious double en-suite to seats in coach.

The most iconic route is arguably Banff to Vancouver, although travellers can choose to divert to rural Jasper, Alberta, for its sprawling national park.

For tea lovers, the Darjeeling Toy Train makes for an unforgettable trip. The 55-mile journey is one of the shortest on the list, but the sights more than make up for it.

Departing from New Jalpaiguri in Bengal to Darjeeling, travellers get to witness lush green tea plantations and the Himilayas, including the Mount Khangchendzonga, the third-highest mountain in the world.
