You can 'save £100s a year' by making three changes to your home

Families could save hundreds of pounds a year in energy bills with some changes to their homes. Experts at consumer advice group Money Wellness have shared some tips for getting your finances in order going into the autumn. Now is a good time to look at ways to bring down your energy bills as the Ofgem price cap is rising from October.
Daniel Waterhouse, external relations manager at Money Wellness, said returning from your holiday is "the perfect opportunity" to go over your regular finances. He said: "Start by reviewing your holiday spending, as it's easy for small overspends to accumulate unnoticed.
"Then, take a close look at your regular bills, such as energy, rent or mortgage, insurance, and subscriptions. With energy prices rising, heating bills are likely to increase in the autumn and winter, so planning ahead is essential to avoid any shocks."
He said it's also worth look at where you can reduce your spending, in particular on non-essential luxuries, such as takeaways or subscriptions.
Looking specifically at energy bills, he pointed to three changes that could take a big amount off your yearly bill. Mr Waterhouse said: "Even small adjustments can make a significant difference over time.
"For example, implementing energy-saving measures like draught-proofing, using LED bulbs, and bleeding radiators can save households £100s annually." If you are struggling to pay your household bills, there is support available.
What support is available to help with energy bills? Some councils offer payments and other support to low-income or struggling families, through the Household Support Fund. Check with your local council to find out what support is available.
You may also be able to get help from your energy supplier. Many providers offer grants for those in energy debt. It's also worth checking if you can claim any benefits from the Government.
Mr Waterhouse said: "There’s a surprising amount of support people may be eligible for but aren’t claiming. Last year alone, we helped people access over £65million in entitlements they were missing out on because they didn’t realise they were eligible.
"And across the UK, around £23 billion in benefits goes unclaimed every year. Money that could make a real difference to households."
You can find out how much you could claim using a benefits calculator tool, with many available online, such as the Better Off Calculator.
'It can make a real difference'The expert spoke about the other support available. Mr Waterhouse said: "Local councils often have additional schemes for things like council tax reduction, energy grants, or support with childcare costs.
"If you’re unsure, speaking to a reputable advice organisation to help you uncover opportunities you might be missing out on. It only takes a little time to check, but it can make a real difference to your finances. And it’s better to know what help is available than leave money on the table."
