When Russia invaded Ukraine three and a half years ago, and electricity and gas prices subsequently exploded worldwide, Germany slid into an energy crisis. As a result, Germans became passionate energy savers. According to recent surveys, the majority have remained so to this day. Some are mindful of costs to ease the burden on their wallets. Others are reducing consumption to protect resources and the climate. Either way, it's worthwhile: Household electricity prices have risen by a third within ten years, and gas prices have doubled. Thus, private energy spending rose significantly faster than the general inflation rate, which was around 29 percent during this period.
