Aitana Bonmatí, admitted for viral meningitis
Spanish international Aitana Bonmatí is in hospital with viral meningitis, diagnosed this Friday, with no recovery time and less than a week before the start of the 2025 European Championship.
National women's national football team coach Montse Tomé gave the news at the start of the press conference following the 3-1 victory over Japan at Butarque, Leganés (Madrid). Tomé was asked about a photo posted on social media by Bonmatí herself, in which she could be seen in a hospital bed.
" She had a few tenths of a second the night before training , but during the day she didn't improve much; she was tired. Today the doctor took her to the hospital for tests; everything was fine, and in the last test, she authorizes me to say this, she had viral meningitis," she stated.
"In principle, it's under control. The word is frightening, but what the doctor told me is that it's under control , that she'll be hospitalized. We don't know the timescale," she added after the last match before the European Championship debut against Portugal next Thursday, July 3.
Tomé insisted that, for now, the presence of the two-time Ballon d'Or winner of the Barça midfielder is doubtful, although they would undoubtedly wait for her until the end. "Aitana is a very important player, we're going to wait for her until the end, no matter what. I have no further information," he stated.
" They haven't told us any timeframes ; we can't give any information about that. I'm just sharing what the doctor told me, what Aitana authorized. We'll have to be patient, but it's under control. I can't say anything about a timeframe," he concluded.
