Explosion at famous restaurant leaves at least 10 dead; attack alleged

At least ten people were killed and several others injured after an explosion at a restaurant in northeastern Nigeria. Local authorities reported that the incident is being investigated as a possible attack, but no official claim of responsibility has yet been made.

The incident was confirmed by the Borno State Police, who deployed operations in the area following the explosion. Police spokesman Nahum Daso explained that the explosion occurred while the restaurant was packed with diners, and that among the victims were people with serious injuries.

Witnesses reported that the explosion occurred in the middle of a storm , which would have facilitated the entry of the person carrying the explosives. Although no organization has claimed responsibility for the attack, authorities have not ruled out the involvement of armed groups operating in the region.

In recent years, extremist factions such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have carried out similar attacks on crowded locations, such as markets and restaurants, with the aim of spreading terror among the civilian population.

According to UN data, the armed conflict in northeastern Nigeria has caused more than 35,000 deaths and displaced more than two million people since 2009. The violence, fueled by an Islamist insurgency, continues to affect vulnerable communities despite government efforts to contain it.

President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his commitment to strengthening security throughout the country, although local authorities acknowledge that the threat persists in areas where state control is limited. An official update on the events and casualties is expected to be released in the coming hours.
