Mother of a family longed to be a police officer and achieved it

Ivonne Martínez, 44, is a single mother of two children, and today her greatest commitment is to be an example as a mother to her 17-year-old daughter, who still lives with her, and an unconditional supporter of her 24-year-old son, who recently married.

“Previously, I was a stay-at-home mom, but since I was a teenager, I had the desire to be a police officer, and when my son was about 15, and I already had a daughter, I decided to fulfill my dream and said, ‘No, I’m not going to die without being a police officer.’” By then, Ivonne had to take care of her two children and, like many others, raise them.

Officer Martínez Chávez is one of seven mothers who are part of the Torreón Reaction Group (GRT) of the Municipal Public Security Directorate.

He has been with the municipal corporation for seven years and six months ago he joined the DSPM's elite group.

“It's an honor for me to serve the public. Passing by and having all the children say goodbye is something I enjoy, because I think that one day my grandchildren will do the same for me. I feel very happy to contribute to the public's efforts to make a better place for everyone,” said Ivonne Martínez.

Like the rest of her classmates, she can't always be home for holidays, birthdays, or Christmas, so Ivonne tries to enjoy her children when she gets home.

"I organize a movie with my children or we go out to the cinema; I try to enjoy them as much as possible... For them, more than anything, I put my heart and soul into it; every day I entrust myself to God to get ahead and return home to find them safe," the officer commented.

The security work Ivonne performs today in the Torreón Reaction Group is not easy, as it involves confronting high-impact crimes. However, she longed to join the group, and she fought until she achieved it.

“I always wanted to be here on this side. I'm the only woman on my team. I felt very satisfied when I joined the group because it's always been what I wanted to do since the group was formed. I wanted to belong here, and the first time I got on the units and we took a tour, I was very excited, and I'm going to continue here as long as I can,” said Ivonne.

Ivonne seeks to be an example for her children and hopes that her dedication and discipline will motivate them to succeed regardless of the circumstances, just as she did when she was left alone to care for them and raise them.

"Happy Mother's Day, have a wonderful time, because only we know what we sacrifice for our families. Enjoy this day and your children, because they're growing up and leaving very quickly," she concluded.
