What is the Euribor and what is it used for?

The Euribor , also known as the Euro Interbank Offered Rate , is an indicator that shows the interest rate at which major European banks lend money to each other. This value is calculated daily and serves as a fundamental reference in the financial world, especially in Europe.

The importance of the Euribor lies in its use as a basis for setting interest rates on various financial products, such as loans and, especially, mortgages . In countries like Spain, many variable-rate mortgages are linked to the Euribor . This means that if the Euribor rises , the monthly mortgage payments also increase. If the Euribor falls , the payments decrease.

This index is revised periodically for mortgages , which causes changes in payments for those with this type of loan. Therefore, both those looking to buy a home and investors closely monitor the evolution of the Euribor , as it has a direct impact on household economies and European financial markets.

The one-year Euribor has been the most widely used official reference rate for mortgage loans in Spain since January 1, 2000. Currently, any fluctuation in the Euribor affects 4.1 million Spanish families, as three out of four mortgages in Spain are referenced to it.

When is the Euribor released?

The daily Euribo R is calculated every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday at 11:00 a.m. In Spain, it is publicly announced in the Official State Gazette.

You can check the Euribor every day on the EL MUNDO website.
