A mobile video game has been developed that reconstructs the armed conflict in the Amazon with virtual reality and real testimonies.

A joint project between the University of San Buenaventura (USB) and the National Navy gave rise to a proposal in Colombia: a transmedia narrative that, through digital media such as video games, virtual reality, and documentaries, reconstructs the impacts of the armed conflict in the department of Amazonas.
This initiative, titled "Currents of Memory: Transmedia Narratives of the Amazon," seeks to transform the way historical memory is told in the country.
Technology and historical memory: a collaborative effort The research was led by the Multimedia Engineering, Political Science, and Psychology programs at USB, in collaboration with National Navy units with a historical presence in the Amazon region. The results include a mobile video game, an immersive virtual reality experience, an illustrated book, microdocumentaries , and an interactive web platform available atwww.corrientesdememoria.com.
Each of these products was developed based on testimonies from civilian victims, active and retired members of the security forces, social leaders, and Indigenous communities. The content was developed based on institutional documentation and academic analysis, ensuring both investigative depth and narrative sensitivity.
Transmedia narratives for new audiences One of the project's central objectives was to bring the story of the conflict closer to diverse audiences—especially younger generations—through the use of accessible technologies and innovative formats. "One of the greatest challenges was translating a historically stale topic like historical memory into disruptive, innovative formats that are accessible to younger generations," explained Andrés Leonardo Durán, a professor in the Multimedia Engineering program and principal investigator of the project.
The proposal was officially presented during the 2025 Bogotá International Book Fair, where it was recognized for its innovation in the field of historical memory narratives. It will also be exhibited on the ship Gloria and in various international ports throughout the year.
Field research and collection of testimonies The investigative process included four expeditions to the Amazonas department, during which more than 70 interviews were conducted with key actors in the area . These voices were integrated into a narrative structure that allows for the exploration of the armed conflict from multiple dimensions: emotional, political, environmental, and institutional.
Citizenship training and educational use The development team is currently working on an educational platform that will integrate all the content created into educational programs for schools and universities.
The purpose is for these tools to serve as a support for developing critical citizenship, fostering collective reflection, and promoting recognition of the realities of armed conflict in peripheral regions like the Amazon.
