A sixty-year-old woman from the south of France dies while hiking in Isère

This information was revealed by Le Dauphiné Libéré . A tragedy occurred on Monday, August 11, in the Écrins massif, in Isère, where a hiker of around 60 years old, "coming from the south of France for the holidays," according to the local newspaper, lost her life on the GR 54.

While walking towards Lake Labarre, a misstep sent her down a steep slope, before she crossed a rocky ledge and fell around thirty meters into the void.

Despite the rapid intervention of CRS Alpes rescuers and a doctor from Samu 38, who arrived by Civil Security helicopter, his death was confirmed on the spot.

His body was airlifted before being entrusted to the funeral home.

The GR 54, a difficult route

This tragic accident is unfortunately not an isolated case: the summer season sees numerous incidents each year in the Alpine massifs, with an average of more than a hundred hiking-related deaths in France each year.
