Kebabs have become too expensive: an influencer calls out Rösti

A symbol of rising prices for many young people, the kebab is now finding its way into the political debate. " Blick " reports that a viral video on TikTok shows an Aargau influencer challenging Federal Councilor Albert Rösti about the rising prices of this culinary specialty. In one video, the Energy Minister humorously joined in the conversation by discussing electricity costs. For Vera Çelik, a socialist activist from Zurich, this fight may seem minor, but it reflects a real unease: "Even those who aren't interested in politics feel that the kebab has become too expensive."

Having become prohibitively expensive for some, the doner now sometimes costs 15 francs. One restaurant owner told "Blick" that he would even have to charge 16 to 20 francs to cover his costs and pay decent wages. Political scientist Michael Hermann also sees the fact that the topic is trending on social media as a strong signal: "Politicians shouldn't immediately descend into activism, but they should listen carefully when young people make the high price of kebabs a topic of discussion. The kebab is, in a way, a symbol of the perceived rise in prices."
