Telephony. Bouygues Telecom data leak: 6.4 million customers affected

France's third-largest telephone operator, which has 18.3 million mobile subscribers, has been the victim of a cyberattack that resulted in the leak of data from 6.4 million customer accounts.
After Free in October with 19.2 million compromised accounts , then SFR in November with 3.6 million customers affected , it is now the turn of Bouygues Telecom with 6.4 million accounts affected, to be the victim of a cyberattack.
In a press release, the third telephone operator in France, which has 18.3 million of subscribers to its mobile phone plans, confirmed Wednesday evening that it had been the victim of a cyberattack resulting in the leak of data from "6.4 million customer accounts."
The stolen data includes "contact details, contractual data, civil status data or company data if you are a professional, as well as IBAN numbers," she explained in an email sent to her clients.
However, Bouygues clarified that "the bank card numbers and passwords for your Bouygues Telecom accounts are not affected." All affected customers have received or will receive an email or text message informing them of this.
This situation could expose subscribers to fraud attempts, such as fraudulent emails, text messages, or calls. "By using your data, a fraudster can pretend to be Bouygues Telecom or another company (bank, insurance company, etc.) and try, for example, to obtain additional information such as your bank card number or your usernames and passwords," the operator emphasizes on a dedicated website.
This cyberattack, detected on Monday, was resolved by Bouygues Telecom teams, who "filed a complaint with the judicial authorities" and reported it to the National Commission for Information Technology and Civil Liberties (CNIL).
