At the port of Dieppe (Seine-Maritime) this summer, strollers are out in force. But the terraces are struggling to attract visitors. Tourists seem to have adopted new consumption patterns. " We prefer sandwiches or quick bites, quickly made along the beach. We prefer to spend our money elsewhere rather than in restaurants ," explains a vacationer.
The decline in French purchasing power is having a direct impact on leisure spending. As a result, restaurant business this summer has decreased by 15 to 20% compared to last year. According to chef Thierry Marx, it's difficult for restaurateurs to lower their prices. " Someone who offers homemade food, who hires staff to do it, who is careful to source their products, their margin is 2% net, once they've paid for everything, " explains the Michelin-starred chef. The restaurant industry isn't the only sector suffering this summer. The hotel industry is also reportedly seeing a bleak outlook.
