“Populist”, “disaster”… Minister McKenzie savaged by the South African press
Former gangster turned mayor and then into government, Gayton McKenzie, a colorful figure, leaves no one indifferent in his country. The minister's recent comments on foreign workers and his plan to bring Formula 1 to South Africa have sparked criticism in the local press.
As South Africa faces an unemployment rate that affects nearly a third of its population, Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie has chosen to launch a hunt for foreigners, one of his favorite themes. “As long as I am a minister, no foreigner will be able to work within an entity if a South African can do the same job,” he trumpeted last week to his administration officials. The latter must submit to an audit to reveal the number of non-nationals in their ranks.
The leader of the Patriotic Alliance (PA), which last year joined the coalition government led by President Cyril Ramaphosa following the loss of its absolute majority by the African National Congress (ANC), particularly highlighted the case of two Zimbabweans employed at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg, as reported by Daily Maverick on May 19 .
