Meeting between Emmanuel Macron and Donald Trump: a virile reunion at the White House

Between a Donald Trump employed in negotiating peace in Ukraine with Putin, and an Emmanuel Macron determined to bring Europe back into the game, the meeting in the Oval Office was marked by both complicity and real divergences.
By Henri Vernet , special correspondent in Washington (United States)Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron did not fail to seal their official reunion, this Monday at the White House (when he came to the reopening ceremony of Notre-Dame in December, the American was not yet in office), with one of those virile handshakes in the form of an arm wrestling match, which had marked their relationship during the first term (2017-2021).
The mixture of camaraderie and rivalry was very present in the Oval Office in Washington. Thus, Trump began to tell, mockingly, about his dinner at the Eiffel Tower with his wife at the invitation of the French president who, "clever", "had spoken two hours in French" to the journalists at his side... but would not have "told them what we had said to each other"! Smiling, Macron squeezed his forearm, as if to stop his exaggerations. The host of the White House praised his "special" relationship with his counterpart; the latter praised his "very friendly welcome, as always" . Between the two men, according to those close to the head of state, there reigns a "trust"... combined with caution and vigilance.
