Israel strikes to demand hostage release and protest occupation of Gaza

Families of those still held by Hamas: "We are halting all activities to save hostages and soldiers."
(LaPresse) Israel is stopping to demand the release of hostages still held by Hamas and an end to the war in Gaza. The families of those kidnapped on October 7, 2023, have called a national strike for today, August 17, to pressure the government to secure the release of their loved ones and to protest the planned expansion of the conflict in Gaza. They fear that the next military offensive in the Strip will further endanger the 50 hostages remaining in Gaza. Only 20 are believed to be alive. Dozens of protesters waved Israeli flags and blocked the road around Latrun, in central Israel. "The State of Israel is stopping today so that every soldier knows that an entire nation is at their side in times of difficulty," said Anat Angrest, mother of hostage Matan Angrest. "Today we are interrupting all activities to rescue and bring home the hostages and soldiers. Today we are interrupting all activities to remember the supreme value of the sacredness of life," the woman continued.
