West Nile virus: 21 new cases in Lazio in four days

In Lazio, tests conducted by the Virology Laboratory of the Lazzaro Spallanzani National Institute for Infectious Diseases, since the August 14 update, have confirmed 21 new cases (16 with fever, 5 with neurological syndrome). The new cases were detected primarily in: Aprilia (Latina), Ardea (Rome), Cassino (Frosinone), Castrocielo (Frosinone), Cisterna di Latina (Latina), Genzano (Rome), Latina, Pontinia (Latina), Sabaudia (Latina), Sermoneta (Latina), Sezze (Latina), Carpinone (Isernia), and Sessa Aurunca (Caserta).
With the latest findings, confirmed positive West Nile virus infections have risen to 174 in 2025. Specifically, the cases are broken down by probable exposure area: 155 cases in the Latina Local Health Authority; 10 cases in the Rome 6 Local Health Authority; 5 cases in the Frosinone Local Health Authority; one case in the Rome 3 Local Health Authority; and three cases outside the region, two in the province of Caserta and one in the province of Isernia. The following is a breakdown of the 174 positive West Nile virus cases: 43 patients are hospitalized in ordinary wards; 29 people have been discharged; 88 patients are in good condition at home; four patients are hospitalized in intensive care; and 10 deaths.
Meanwhile, a 65-year-old man from Oristano has tested positive for West Nile virus and is hospitalized in the medical department of San Martino Hospital in Oristano. This is the fourth case of human West Nile virus recorded in 2025 in the province of Oristano and in Sardinia.
Two cases of West Nile virus infection have been reported in a small Friulian town, Rivignano Teor (Udine), by the Central Friuli University Health Authority. As reported by the newspaper Messaggero Veneto, the cases involve two men, over 75, from two hamlets, who live five kilometers apart. Their health is good, and fortunately, their symptoms are mild.
