Apple Made in America: Cook Announces $500 Billion Investment

The reaction to the tariffs

The Cupertino company is preparing a huge plan for the United States, including machine learning, software, artificial intelligence, chip production and servers. 20 thousand new jobs expected. Trump's (pro-duties) exultation

Last Thursday, Apple CEO Tim Cook met with President Donald Trump. After the meeting in the Oval Office, Trump immediately wanted to drop a spoiler: “Apple is going to invest a lot in the United States!” Today, the confirmation arrived: the Cupertino company will launch “the biggest spending commitment ever”. 500 billion dollars, and 20,000 new jobs in research over the next four years in machine learning, software and artificial intelligence, but also chip and server production in (Republican) states like Texas and Arizona, new factories and the strengthening of existing centers between Michigan and Oregon. This fits perfectly with Trump’s desire to produce in America and not abroad. “We’re going to have a lot of chip manufacturers coming in, and car manufacturers too,” Trump said: “They’ve blocked two factories in Mexico that were under construction. They’ve stopped everything and they’re going to build them here, because they don’t want to pay the tariffs . The tariffs are incredible!”

Many of Apple’s products, assembled in China, could face an additional 10 percent tariff increase on imported goods, and chips could face a 25 percent tariff, as recently threatened by the White House. In 2018, during Trump’s first term, Apple made a similar promise — with a $350 billion spending spree, including a campus in Austin, which is still under construction.

In 2021, Cook had announced an expenditure of 430 billion, some for a campus with three thousand employees in North Carolina, which was then blocked in the development phase. Of the 500 billion to be invested promised this time around, it is not known how many involve projects already underway and how many will be dedicated to the production of series and films for Apple TV. While Elon Musk's Doge cutter is becoming more and more aggressive, the president is taking care of "deals", his specialty, and Cook is protecting himself, as the big Taiwanese companies that produce iPhones, PlayStations and HPs are doing, also opening factories in Texas to escape the duties, and perhaps get into Trump's good graces.
