Steel of the future in Piombino: Metinvest and Danieli sign joint venture

A decisive step toward the reindustrialization of Piombino and the production of low-carbon steel in Italy. Metinvest BV, a Ukrainian steel and mining group, and Industrielle Beteiligung SA, part of the Friuli-based Danieli Group, have finalized the Shareholders' Agreement to establish the joint venture Metinvest Adria SpA. The signing, which consolidates a strategic partnership begun months ago, formalizes a transaction intended to revitalize an industrial site that has been dormant for over a decade.
The joint venture's shareholding structure gives Metinvest a 75% stake, while Industrielle Beteiligung holds the remaining 25%. This corporate structure was officially established with the appointment of a jointly owned Board of Directors, composed of eight members (Luca Matteo Villa, Yuriy Ryzhenkov, Gregory Mason, Fabio Londero, Anna Mareschi Danieli, Fabio Londero, Marco Lerz, Marco di Giacomo, and Maria Vasylieva), and a Board of Statutory Auditors (Matteo Costigliolo, Fabio Ruosi, and Giorgio Berta). The final bureaucratic formalities for the agreement to be fully operational are now pending.
The project involves an investment of over €2.5 billion for the construction of a next-generation steel plant in Piombino. This initiative not only revitalizes a strategic production area, but also represents a model for the sector's ecological transition , aiming to produce steel and flat products with a reduced environmental impact.
The revitalization of the Tuscan steel hub will lead to the creation of approximately 1,100 new jobs , a significant benefit for the local and national economy. The plan, which enjoys the full support of the authorities, will be financed through a combination of equity, external debt, and public contributions, although negotiations with banks are still ongoing.
The partnership between Metinvest and Danieli, approved by the European Commission in recent months, represents a positive example of industrial cooperation. The Danieli Group, a specialist in the supply of steelmaking plants, will contribute its technological expertise to build one of Europe's most advanced steel mills. This project combines innovation, sustainability, and the rebirth of a region.
