The U.S. files its first formal narcoterrorism charges against a member of the CJNG.

The U.S. files its first formal narcoterrorism charges against a member of the CJNG.

For the first time in United States history, a Mexican woman was formally charged with providing material support to " narcoterrorism " for collaborating with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), considered a foreign terrorist organization since February of this year.

María del Rosario Navarro-Sánchez, 39, faces charges of delivering grenades to the cartel, as well as participating in the trafficking of drugs, weapons, money, and people into the United States. The Prosecutor's Office maintains that her involvement was significant: she acted as a key operator for the criminal group from Mexico.

Grenades, drugs and migrants

The indictment was unsealed Friday by the Texas Department of Justice, which detailed that Navarro-Sánchez was not acting alone . Two men (Luis Carlos Dávalos-López, 27, and Gustavo Castro-Medina, 28) were also arrested for similar offenses, all related to providing logistical support to the CJNG, one of the most violent cartels in the Americas.

Authorities say that, in addition to the weapons, the defendants facilitated the illegal crossing of migrants and the shipment of drugs such as methamphetamine and fentanyl, posing a direct threat to U.S. national security.

Trump declared total war on the cartels

Since January of this year, the U.S. government has intensified its frontal fight against cartels, following former President Donald Trump's executive order directing his agencies to completely dismantle transnational criminal organizations.

“We will never allow criminal gangs and cartels to terrorize American communities. The days of unchecked cartel violence are over,” said Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

With this indictment, the Department of Justice seeks to set a precedent for classifying the operations of Mexican cartels as "narcoterrorism." The detainee was captured in Mexico on May 4 and will be tried on charges that could result in life in prison.
