While the world focuses on other trouble spots, civil wars have been raging in Myanmar for almost eighty years. After the military coup in 2021, young people left their studies and families behind to join the armed resistance: a true revolution has been unleashed. In the VPRO series "The Hidden Struggle of Myanmar," they explain why they left their familiar lives, took up arms, and were willing to sacrifice everything in their fight for freedom and democracy. Ruben Terlou and cameraman Bruce Amende visit them to discover what drives them. Why are young people, in particular, trying to oust the military? Who is fighting whom in this largest country in mainland Southeast Asia, sixteen times the size of the Netherlands? And who are the allies of the military dictatorship in Myanmar?
Embarrassing fumble"Hilariously heartbreaking," NRC called the first season of the series Bodem (Bode ). The second season is just as good. Actress, writer, and director Eva Crutzen once again steps into the shoes of single Cat, who now seems to have her life pretty much in order. She's turning forty, has a steady girlfriend, and a steady job at a funeral home. But before the first episode is over, she's already blown everything out of proportion. Car sex with her ex, tantra with a funeral client, she moves into a camper, gets pregnant. Who's the father? Embarrassing bumbling and self-destructive behavior. These are, in themselves, the standard ingredients of any thirty-something comedy. But even more than in the first installment, Crutzen has thrown in surreal elements that give the series its own character.
Spectacular action with ZeldaThe Zelda game Tears of the Kingdom received a sequel this week. While in that earlier game you played from the perspective of the hero Link, this time you play as Princess Zelda, transported into the past. There, she becomes embroiled in a massive war that originated with the villain Ganondorf. Tears of the Kingdom was a sophisticated puzzle game in a vast, open world. Hyrule Warriors is the opposite: this game focuses primarily on its action, where you, as Zelda or one of her companions, battle hundreds of enemies simultaneously in closed-off levels. Visually, it's spectacular—and the story offers just enough intrigue to keep long-time Zelda fans intrigued.
Beethoven's string quartetsIn November, Concertzender is devoting three broadcasts to Ludwig van Beethoven's string quartets. This Saturday, part 2. Around 1806, Beethoven wrote three quartets that have become known as the Razumovsky Quartets. With these compositions, he could be said to have marked a turning point in the history of the string quartet. They will be performed by the Dutch Narratio Quartet, featuring Johannes Leertouwer and Franc Polman on violin, Dorothea Vogel on viola, and Viola de Hoog on cello. This ensemble recently released the first complete CD recording of all sixteen quartets, performed on period instruments and with bows from Beethoven's time. You can also listen to the other episodes of this series on concertzender.nl.
