At first, there was just a strange smell. Then fire, panic, and people screaming from their balconies. And the firefighters? They were stuck behind a locked barrier, without a door code. On Friday afternoon, August 1st, a fire broke out in an apartment building in Szklarska Poręba (Lower Silesian Voivodeship). The sauna caught fire. Although the fire was quickly contained, the rescue operation could have ended in tragedy.

A potential tragedy threatened to strike the resort town of Szklarska Poręba. A sauna caught fire in an apartment building belonging to a popular chain. Guests moving into one of the apartments detected a burning smell. The fire department was immediately called.

The barrier hindered the action

When rescuers arrived , they encountered a barrier. Literally! A barrier blocked the entrance. Then another problem arose. The entrance door would only open after entering a code.

"Terrified people were screaming from their balconies, giving us codes," one firefighter reported, as quoted by local media. One of the rescuers only managed to get inside when a child opened the balcony for him.

A total of 45 people were evacuated. The fire was quickly brought under control. No one was injured, but the entire operation revealed serious problems with the building's accessibility for emergency services.
