• The Sejm passed an amendment to the Act on Pensions and Annuities from the Social Insurance Fund concerning an increase in the funeral allowance from PLN 4,000 to PLN 7,000.
• The amendment passed by the Sejm assumes an increase in the funeral allowance to PLN 7,000. The benefit will be subject to indexation in a situation where inflation exceeds 5%.
• The new regulations also provide for the principle of settling the so-called special allowance. It may be granted to a person who has covered the costs of a funeral.

The Sejm passed an amendment to the act concerning an increase in the funeral allowance.

The increase in the funeral allowance from PLN 4,000 to PLN 7,000 is assumed in the amendment to the act on pensions and annuities from the Social Insurance Fund, which was passed by the Sejm. The increase is to come into force in 2026. The amendment will now go to the Senate.

410 MPs voted in favour of adopting the amendment to the Act on pensions and annuities from the Social Insurance Fund and certain other acts, one voted against and six abstained.

The current amount of the one-off benefit in the event of death and the related need for burial is PLN 4,000 and has remained unchanged since 2011.

The amendment passed by the Sejm assumes an increase in the funeral allowance to PLN 7,000.

The benefit will be subject to indexation if inflation exceeds 5 percent.

The new regulations also mention the principle of settling the so-called earmarked benefit.

It may be awarded to the person who covered the funeral costs if the deceased person is not entitled to the benefit , or if the person who covered the funeral costs is entitled to a funeral benefit and incurred extraordinary costs in connection with the funeral, which were difficult to predict and impossible to cover from the funeral benefit.

The planned date of entry into force of the Act is 1 January 2026.

According to data from the Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Policy , PLN 1.2 billion will be allocated to increasing the funeral allowance in 2026.

The justification for the new law emphasized that the current amount of the funeral allowance (PLN 4,000) does not even cover most of the funeral costs. It was pointed out that currently the costs of a funeral amount to a minimum of PLN 8,000-10,000.

These amounts vary depending on the region where the funeral is organised - in larger cities the prices are usually higher than in the countryside or in smaller towns.
