The May full moon is approaching. When to observe the Flower Moon?

The May full moon is known as the Full Flower Moon. Our satellite will be visible in its full glory in the night sky for the fifth time this year.

May Full Moon. When and How to observe her?

The astronomical phenomenon of the full moon can be observed on average every 29.5 days. The next full moon in 2025 will occur on Monday, May 12 at 6:58 p.m. It will still be light at this time, and in Warsaw the sun will set at 8:20 p.m. However, this does not mean that the May full moon will not be visible. The moon in its full glory will be visible as soon as it gets dark. If weather conditions allow, the phenomenon will be visible all night long. The moon's disk will also be clearly visible on the previous and following nights, and the moon's brightness will then be over 99 percent.

The phenomenon is best viewed from a location away from city lights. The full moon can be observed with the naked eye, no specialist equipment is needed, but more detail can be seen with binoculars or a telescope.

Full Flower Moon. Where from? did its name come from?

The name of the May full moon was given by the indigenous people of North America. It refers to the changes occurring in nature, which comes to life at this time. In May, flowers and plants bloom abundantly. However, this is not the only name for this spring full moon. It is also called the Milk Moon, Hare Moon, or Corn Planting Moon.

What is a full moon?

Full Moon is one of the four phases of the Moon. It occurs when our satellite is on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun. At this time, the entire disk of the Moon is illuminated by the Sun.

This phenomenon usually occurs once a month, sometimes twice. It is then referred to as a full blue moon. A particularly spectacular phenomenon is a super full moon. We are talking about it when the full moon coincides with its position near perigee, which is the place in the orbit that is as close to Earth as possible. Our satellite then appears up to 14 percent larger and shines up to 30 percent brighter than at apogee, which is the time when it is at the most distant point in the orbit from Earth.
