The biggest super full moon of the year - November 5th

04/11/2025 update: 04/11/2025

2 minutes of reading

November 5th will be the full moon, the one during which the Silver Globe will be closest to Earth this year.

We regularly observe the full moon several times a year. However, sometimes, during the full moon, the moon is closest to Earth in its orbit around our planet. Then, its disk appears slightly larger in the sky and "shines" a bit brighter. This situation is called a supermoon or a superfull moon.

The difference between the full moon at perigee (closest to Earth) and apogee (farthest from Earth) is 14 percent of the size of the disk of Earth's natural satellite; while in the case of its brightness it is as much as 30 percent more.

The next supermoon will be visible in the sky on November 5th. At 2:19 PM, Earth's natural satellite will be at its fullest. On the same day, at 11:30 PM, it will pass through its orbital perigee. Its distance from Earth will be 356,833 km, making it the closest it will be in 2025.

On this day, the Moon will rise at 5:00 PM and set the following day at 9:31 AM. If we look at the sky around 10:00 PM, we will see a beautiful configuration of the Moon and bright stars and planets, because by then the constellation Orion and the planet Jupiter will have fully risen.

If we look down from the Moon to the horizon, slightly to the left, we first see the bright star Aldebaran, and below it, the constellation Orion, composed of bright stars and resembling a schematic human silhouette. To the left of Orion, bright Jupiter shines. On the opposite side of the Moon (above the southern horizon), and about as far away as Jupiter, is Saturn.

This configuration also looks interesting in the morning. Then, the Moon is in the west, low on the horizon, and in a line to the left are Aldebaran, Orion, and Sirius. Jupiter is higher, and Saturn is hidden below the horizon.

The media likes to refer to the full moon with terms from Native American culture. The November full moon is then called the "Beaver Moon" or the "Frost Moon." The name, referring to beavers, comes from the fact that for the Algonquins (an Native American tribe from the Ottawa River area in Canada), it was a time to set beaver traps before the marshes froze.
