Without mentioning the minister's name, Alcolumbre released a press release in which he said he has "confidence in the strengthening of institutions, including the Judiciary."
"The National Congress does not allow interference in the actions of our branches of government," he states.
In the document, Alcolumbre also says that the Brazilian Parliament "remains united in the defense of national interests, always vigilant in protecting our institutions and the country's sovereignty."
Commenting on the tariff hike imposed by Donald Trump on Brazil, the Senate president says that the institution has been working to "strengthen dialogue and seek balanced solutions."
“The US government’s interference in the Brazilian justice system is unacceptable,” he said.
“The Brazilian government stands in solidarity with Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Federal Supreme Court, who is the target of sanctions motivated by the actions of Brazilian politicians who betray our country and our people in defense of their own interests.”
Washington imposed the sanctions on the minister based on the so-called Magnitsky Act. The decision was published by the US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control on Wednesday (30).
According to the US government, all of Alexandre de Moraes's potential assets in the US are frozen, as are any companies linked to him. The minister is also prohibited from conducting transactions with US citizens and companies—using US-branded credit cards, for example.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent directly mentioned an alleged "hunt for swindlers" targeting former President Jair Bolsonaro by the minister.
"Alexandre de Moraes has taken upon himself the role of judge and jury in an illegal witch hunt against citizens and companies of the United States and Brazil," Bessent said.
"Moraes is responsible for an oppressive campaign of censorship, arbitrary detentions that violate human rights, and politically motivated prosecutions—including against former President Jair Bolsonaro. Today's action makes clear that Treasury will continue to hold accountable those who threaten U.S. interests and the freedoms of our citizens," the secretary said in a statement.
