Federal Public Prosecutor's Office opens new investigation against Jair Bolsonaro

The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office in the Federal District recently opened an investigation into Jair Bolsonaro to investigate the former president for "committing political gender-based violence" and "violations of fundamental human rights" committed against women.

The investigation was opened due to offensive remarks Bolsonaro made against women supporters of the Workers' Party (PT). In March of this year, the former president appeared in a video posted on social media describing female PT supporters as "ugly" and "inedible."

"You can see, there are no beautiful women who support the Workers' Party. There are only ugly ones. Sometimes, when I'm at the airport, someone insults me. Woman, right? I look at her face and say, 'Wow, Mom... Inedible,'" Bolsonaro said.

The one-year investigation will “investigate possible violations of fundamental human rights, of a civil nature, committed against women, resulting from discriminatory and misogynistic statements attributed to the former President of the Republic, broadcast in a video published on social media, with the possible occurrence of collective and social moral damage.”

The case was brought to the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office following a complaint from the Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship. Investigations will be carried out to "convince the minister about the measures that may be adopted."

Bolsonaro has been under house arrest for nearly two weeks in Brasília. He was arrested on the orders of Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes after failing to comply with the Supreme Court Justice's orders.
