Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Monday that the Security Cabinet will meet Tuesday to decide on the next steps in the offensive in the Gaza Strip.
However, local media reported that Netanyahu's decision has already been made and involves the "total occupation" of the Palestinian enclave. "The die has been cast, we are moving towards the total occupation of the Gaza Strip," sources close to the prime minister told the Ynet News website.
The sources revealed that there will be "operations even in areas where hostages are being held" and, taking into account the already announced objections of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and its Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, they assured: "If the IDF Chief of Staff does not agree, he should resign."
The Jerusalem Post also reported that the Israeli leader intends to fully occupy Gaza.
The IDF currently controls 75% of the Palestinian enclave and believes that a full occupation of the territory could endanger the hostages still in Gaza. The military group has already threatened to kill all hostages if the Israeli military approaches their location. Furthermore, the Israeli army is concerned about the conditions facing civil society and believes it could take years to destroy all of Hamas's infrastructure.
According to Army Radio, Eyal Zamir is frustrated with the political leadership's lack of strategy. This Security Cabinet meeting comes after indirect negotiations with Hamas in Qatar failed to reach an agreement, and White House Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff visited Israel last week.
On Sunday, Netanyahu reinforced that Hamas is not interested in a deal, which is why he believes the conflict can be resolved with a more aggressive military operation. His statements became even harsher after videos of two hostages appearing visibly weakened were released.
